Queer Along the River: LGBTQ+ South London history and drawing workshop

Workshop

Friday 19 December 2pm- 4pm

Age Guidance: 18+

Join Dr Catherine Hahn in a history and drawing workshop on queer South London. You will learn about LGBTQ+ South London history from the 17th century onward and use a variety of drawing methods to recall queer pasts.

The session is aimed at LGBTQ+ individuals and allies

About this event:

The workshop reclaims diverse, working-class and migrant LGBTQ+ South London history through local stories and drawing. In doing so, it challenges Victorian accounts that served as cultural erasure in the area. In the workshop, we will explore how drawing methods can revive queer pasts.

Art produced in workshops will be shown in the Queer Along the River exhibition in Deptford Lounge for LGBTQ+ History month in February 2026. Together, we will put South London LGBTQ+ heritage on the map.

Any level of art experience, including none, is welcome. Historic resources, art material and support will be provided.

About the facilitator:

Dr Catherine Hahn (she/her) is an artist and social researcher who has taught extensively in Visual Cultures at Goldsmiths and Art History at the University of Kent. Catherine has facilitated collaborative art workshops for many years. She draws on her personal experience and research on queer South London for this session.
