A short film showcase of the filmmaking talent in Lewisham! From Japanese paper theatre to a spontaneous pilgrimage to Switzerland, in content these films span across countries and creative forms, but they were all made here in Lewisham. Followed by a Q&A with the local filmmakers.

a border of flat stones – Dir. Cáit McClay and Éiméar McClay

A quietly radical meditation on how British imperialist rule in Ireland compounded the Great Famine.

Cupids – Dir. Nick Grills

Romantic comedy imagining a world where everyone who is single has their own invisible cupid, tasked with finding them love. The film follows two cupids trying to steer their two humans to first meet and then talk to each other in the brief moment when they are in the same coffee shop.

A Friend of the Devil – Dir. Freddie Christie

Ainsley travels from London to Stockholm to visit the mysterious Codax Gigas, or ‘Devil’s Bible’. Legend has it that author of the book, Herman the Recluse, persevered through great ordeals to write it. As he travels, Ainsley considers Herman’s feat and reflects on the human desire to persevere.

Marcia’s Medium Matcmakers – Dir. Randa Ray

Marcia’s medium matchmakers is a short comedy about a psychic matchmaker with unorthodox methods and finding true love for her clients.

Poplars – Dir. Alexandros Vounatsos

Lesvos, 1997, Gulf of Geras. A father waits at the port for his two children. When they arrive, they are older. In an olive field, three poplars mirror them. As he smokes and grows angry, time accelerates. Realizing the loss, he merges with a tree. Years later, his sons return.

SNEEZE – Dir. Gareth Brierley, Fiona Creese and Maya Willcocks

A sneeze leads to an unexpected journey…

The Spider’s Thread – Dir. Aya Nakamura 

The Spider’s Thread’ is a Paper Theatre film by Aya Nakamura, Lewisham resident Japanese theatre-maker. Based on the famous story by Ryunosuke Akutagawa, it combines the Japanese tradition of Kamishibai with the Western approach of Paper Theatre to see how this unique meeting will unfold.
