Deptford High Street Exchange An Open Conversation through Photography

Talk

Tuesday 15 September

What can a photograph of a shopfront tell us about a street and the people who use it?

Age guidance: 18+

Join photographer Adam Wiseman and curator Katharina Uhe for an open conversation about Deptford High Street, using photographs from DEPTFORD HIGH STREET Exchange as a starting point. For the project, Wiseman photographed approximately 186 commercial frontages along Deptford High Street, creating a portrait of the street through its shops, businesses and changing architecture. Working with Uhe, the project has developed beyond this photographic survey through a series of exchanges and conversations with people working along the High Street. At Deptford Lounge, the photographs become a starting point for a wider conversation about place, memory, business, belonging and change. What changes when a photograph is returned to the place where it was made? What do we recognise in these photographs? What might be missing? Can the High Street itself become p art of a n exhibition? Who is the High Street for and what has changed, or might change? This is an open and informal conversation. You do not need any knowledge of photography, art or architecture to take part. We welcome anyone who lives, works, shops or spends time in Deptford.
