What Is Deptford Scratch
Scratch nights are a platform for emerging artists to develop new work. Here, writers have an opportunity to see their work performed by actors in front of a live audience in a low-pressure environment whilst it is still in development.
We will shortly be looking for writers from Global Majority backgrounds to take part in our next scratch night in October following the relaunch of Deptford Scratch. If you do not identify as Global Majority the next Deptford Scratch in April will be open to everyone so keep an eye out for updates.
Submissions will be opening at the beginning of July.
What We Are Looking For
- Pieces of theatre with a maximum duration of 10 minutes.
- No more than 4 character.
- These can be self-contained or extracts of something you are working on.
- Unfortunately, we will not be able to give feedback but will let you know either way whether your piece has been selected.
- If selected, we hold a pitch night attended by actors from which you can cast your piece. In working this way, we hope to encourage new connections within the industry.
- You will be expected to cast and direct yourself. However, if you would like support with this it’s worth mentioning at the pitch event as you may find someone who is interested in a role other than performing.
- We cannot accept submissions without a script but this does not need to be a final draft.
- Please note tech is very minimal so be aware of this.
- We do not wish to sensor the work but please keep in mind the audience will be 16+ so we will need to consider content warnings
- In submitting a piece you are agreeing that that is the piece of work you wish to share. If during the process you wish to change the piece being showcased or make significant changes to the scene this must be approved by the producer.
How to Apply (once submissions open)
Please fill in the form below and submit your script/ extract.
You will notice we do have some demographic questions. These will not play any role in our decision but are simply there for us to ensure we are reaching as many people as possible and to assess how we may improve this in the future. However, if you do not wish to answer these simply select prefer not to say.
The deadline for submissions is Saturday 1st August midnight.
We can’t wait to hear from you!!
