Dr Justin Gilbert will speak on the love affair between once New Cross resident Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett, their subsequent marriage, elopement, and life together in Italy, and how this affected the poetry of these two great nineteenth-century writers.

Justin is an independent researcher and a committee member of the Browning Society. His book Robert Browning and the Gothic Imagination was published in 2025, and he is part of the editorial team working on a collected edition of Robert Browning in the Longman Annotated English Poets series.
