Designed with accessibility in mind

Deptford Lounge has been purpose built to welcome all members of the community irrespective of age, ability or additional needs.

The building has level access, with accessible toilets and shower facilities also available.

Our building

Deptford Lounge Library and Café are all on the ground floor, as well as two of our meeting rooms. Lift access is available to the first and second floor for the meeting rooms, main hall, studio, music rooms, food science room, terrace room and ball court.

Travel

Frankham Street car park is our closest car park with seven disabled bays. The pay-and-display parking bays give convenient access to us, just 85m away, as well as Deptford Market, Deptford High Street and Wavelengths.

For those travelling via Taxi your drop off would be on Giffin Street directly next to the Lounge.

New Cross and Deptford stations are step-free from the platform to the street. Deptford Bridge is step-free from train to street.

Entering the main building

Deptford Lounge main entrance has level access; visitors can use either the disabled door or the revolving door. The disabled door opens with a light push on the “Push to Open” button. Within the building library staff will be happy to help with the library facilities. Centre Management staff are also on hand to assist customers with room bookings, meetings, events and activities.

Toilets

Male and Female toilets are on the left of the foyer with the Baby Changing and Changing Place/Accessible toilet next to both. The children’s accessible toilet is situated at the back of the library on the left hand side. There are toilets on all floors of Deptford Lounge, including adapted toilets for those with access requirements. We also have accessible shower facilities on the second floor next to the Ball Court.

Changing Place Facilities:

These are toilets with enough space for those with access requirements and their personal assistants. They are fully equipped, including a height adjustable changing bench and a hoist. Those with access needs must register with centre management prior to using the facilities, in order to receive some basic information on the use of the equipment.

Our toilets were named Lewisham’s Accessible Loo of the Year in 2023!

Lifts, stairs and escalators

All lifts have vocal announcements and controls at a height suitable for wheelchair users.

Hearing-impaired visitors

Induction loops are available in all our meeting rooms. Customers with hearing aids will need to switch the hearing aid to the ‘T’ position in order to use this facility.

Animals

Assistance dogs are welcome in the building with their owners.

Emergency procedures

Should it be necessary to evacuate the building a continuous alarm will sound and red ceiling lights will begin to flash. There are refuge area on all floors equipped with an Emergency Voice Communication System and Evacuation Chairs.
